In the course of social development, the impact of culture and nature are indivisible. We designed the project with a banyan tree at the beginning of the library in memory of the traditional Taiwanese social gathering, echoing the good old times when people joined under the banyan tree and as a token to all the great local Taiwanese stories that started its tale underneath the banyan tree. In this project, we dig down into the cultural history and geographical history of this area to create a public library for all ages to enjoy.

The tree of stories leads readers into the library as a road from the ancient tales to the modern stories, starting with the banyan tree, unfolding the reading experience through different layers of book-like structure. The entrance of the library is a beautiful multi-purpose platform for outdoor exhibitions and an activity stage. The latest publish welcomes visitors at the second layer of the library. For people who seek a moment of peacefulness, the third layer provides a place for one to enjoy their reading while surrounded by nature. The passing of time is reflected upon the shade and shadows of plants on the bookshelf, creating interesting images on the classic white book cover structure. The library ends with a black book cover layer as a beautiful conference hall.

The project site is located between Chengcing Lake and Weiwuying Metropolitan Park. As the city developed vastly, old rivers and canals were replaced with underground water resources, and natural habitats were replaced by roads and skyscrapers. Therefore, we decided to keep the natural condition of the park and restore the channel water from the nearby remains as a pond surrounding the library. The pond with the greenery around forms a natural habitat for birds to rest and for animals to live in. What’s more, with the pond at the front of the library, the air and dust are purified as they blow into the library, bringing fresh and clean air when as a natural flitter.

Compared to other library projects, this community library is rather small. However, its location site, and cultural influences bestow the project with its significance. In memory of the history of Fengshan district, we bring back the good old time under the banyan tree and the sound of the canal in this library project. The tree of stories leads readers into the library as a road from the ancient tales to the modern stories, starting with the banyan tree, unfolding the reading experience through different layers of book-like structure.
