The brief of the clients was to create a memorial for their father Padmaramji Kularia.Nokha is a district in Rajasthan that encompasses 144 small villages. Studies of the vicinity & the current facilities in the village schools and the village areas fueled the need to create a community centre for all age groups. The main spiral building of 9000 sqft becomes an inclined garden with 2 varying slopes allowing it to be used for recreation & gatherings, offering views of the surrounding desert landscape from the rooftop.Underneath the garden , at the lower eastern side is a small museum with a children’s digital library on the higher western side.

Located in Rajasthan, India, amidst the arid landscapes of the Nokha district, the Nokha Village Community Centre, is a project that not only serves as a community hub for the 144 villages in the district but also as a memorial for Padmaramji Kularia, envisioned by his family. The southern side is enveloped in a grass covered earth berm to mitigate heat gain in response to the desert climate with temperatures of 35 to 40°C for 8 months annually. The building forms an open courtyard with an amphitheatre to provide a space for music performances, talks & social interaction. The ovoid library is sheathed in natural sandstone screens derived from traditional architecture in Rajasthan with the stone being sourced from the immediate surrounding area.

The project is located in a desert landscape wherein temperatures reach as high as 35 to 40°C for 8 months annually, thus to be able to create a semi open interactive spaces in such harsh climatic environment was challenging. Thus the southern side is covered in a grass covered earth berm to mitigate heat gain in response to the desert climate. The building forms a partially shaded open courtyard with an amphitheater to provide a space for music performances, talks & social interaction. The ovoid library is sheathed in natural sandstone screens derived from traditional architecture in Rajasthan with the stone being sourced from the immediate surrounding area. These reduce the heat gain and create different shadow patterns throughout the day.

The Nokha Village Community Centre is a vibrant hub for all age groups, providing a space for music, talks, and social interaction. The project exemplifies how thoughtful architecture can create expansive community spaces without a large footprint, with a built-up area of 9,000 square feet generating 5 times more usable space, including a 27,000-square-foot open auditorium. The main spiral building of 9000 sqft becomes an inclined garden with 2 varying slopes allowing it to be used for recreation & gatherings, offering views of the surrounding desert landscape from the rooftop. Underneath the garden , at the lower eastern side is a small museum with a children’s digital library on the higher western side.

In their words “we could have never imagined that this memorial would attract so many people from our community & the villages. It is a joy to see children playing & learning here. It is heart warming to get such appreciation for our building”.
