During the base inspection, the "train skin" cave dwellings remaining in Dazhai Village came into our sight. Cave dwellings are an ancient form of living for residents in northwest China. The history of cave dwellings can be traced back thousands of years. The "train skin" cave dwellings belong to the "cliff cave" type of traditional dwelling cave dwellings. The buildings are connected in rows and built along the terrain and mountains, forming an imposing overall image. Cave dwellings serve as the motif element of this museum design.
The base is located in a mountainous area, covering an area of approximately 4.7 hectares, and is in the shape of a north-south strip. The height difference inside the site is large, with the height difference between the highest point and the lowest point being nearly 30m. It is low in the middle and high on both sides. At the same time, the surroundings of the base are not blank. The museum has close mutual sight lines and path relationships with many surrounding attractions and historical relics such as Hongqi Square, Dazhai Cadre College, and Dazhai Scenic Area.
The main material of the exterior facade is local stone, and relatively low-tech and low-cost local practices such as rubble retaining walls are adopted. The use of local materials and craftsmanship allows the building to blend into its environment. The structural system adopts a reinforced concrete frame shear wall system, and the roof adopts an arched concrete roof. The right-angled shape above the arch support participates in the common force. At the same time, the method of digging holes is used to retain only effective structural components, reduce the dead weight to form a cavity, and leave space for the building's plumbing and heating pipes, ensuring the purity and integrity of the indoor exhibition hall space.
The museum follows the mountain topography and sets up four linear spaces with a "cave dwelling" motif from low to high. The vault on the first floor is relatively short, which not only serves as the entrance canopy of the museum, but also forms a rich gray space under the eaves, providing abundant possibilities for displaying various activities of the museum in the future. The height of the vault on the second floor gradually increases, and skylight is introduced to indicate the main vertical traffic space. The second and third floors are the core exhibition spaces of the museum, with the highest space height reaching 17 meters. The two arched spaces are connected up and down, combined with high side windows and skylights, to form a commemorative and experiential exhibition space. The scales and processing methods of the four arches are different, forming four column-free full-height spaces with different heights and different lighting treatments, which cleverly responds to the needs of flexible use for various displays and activities, and also realizes the integration of architecture, indoors, and exhibitions. integrated design.
The museum's tour flow is diversified. From the foyer, you can choose to go directly to the main exhibition hall or visit the temporary exhibition hall first. From the preface hall, you can enter the "Dazhai Story" themed exhibition hall. The hall uses interactive projections, videos, displays, and sand tables. There are many ways to learn about the history of Dazhai. Then go up the ramp and experience the Dazhai-themed series of physical exhibitions and giant reliefs and other art works in the
