After sustaining heavy damage from Hurricane Irma, The Baker Museum required repair. The subsequent renovation entails both the replacement of the Museum’s façades as well as the expansion of the existing Museum to the south with an improved entrance and the addition of new event, educational, and museum support areas. The facility houses new spaces for art, performance, education, and social interaction. The Baker Museum’s curved exterior is clad in limestone and metal with a durable water-resistant barrier against future storms. The newly created Norris Courtyard at the center of the Artis—Naples Cultural Campus features sculpture and provides a setting for outdoor gatherings, events, and direct access to The Baker Museum.

Weiss/Manfredi’s design for the 8.5-acre site unites a disconnected set of existing buildings and ad-hoc spaces to present a unified identity as a welcoming cultural campus. Drawing inspiration from its coastal setting, the design creates open-air connections between the landscape and institution. Visitors to Artis-Naples will arrive upon a reimagined collection of landscaped courtyards and clear pedestrian routes. The Elevated Terrace provides direct access to a new 600-seat performance space, a public multidisciplinary Reading Room and Archive, and a new 150-seat flexible theater. A Visitor Services Lobby includes orientation services and elevators to a new Education Center, Event Space, and Rooftop Restaurant. The site design organizes a welcoming arrival, intuitive orientation, safe pedestrian circulation, and additional on-site parking.

The most sustainable feature of the Baker Museum is its renovation and hurricane resistant design, increasing project and material life span. Resilient strategies include improved waterproofing and drainage, the installation of a durable façade system, hurricane tested glazing, installation of a protected loading dock, and the incorporation of an ecological landscape design that accounts for proper drainage and utilizes native plantings. These resilient design strategies are coupled with programmatic strategies that allow Artis—Naples to better serve the surrounding community and provide enhanced visual and performing arts programming. The Baker Museum has also won an Honorable Mention Fast Company's 2022 Innovation by Design Awards in the Sustainable Design Category.

Our design entails both the repair of the museum's façades and the expansion of the existing museum to the south with an improved entrance and new event, educational, and museum support areas. The curved exterior is clad in stone and metal with a durable water-resistant barrier to protect against future storms. The Norris Courtyard features sculptures and provides a setting for both events and direct access to The Baker Museum. A new entrance sequence provides a more open public experience and visible museum entry, relocating the museum store and ticketing to the museum lobby. The museum reception increases contiguous gallery space; an open arrival with an information desk, gift shop, and lobby welcomes patrons; and the outdoor terraces take advantage of the climate, providing space for outdoor sculptures and events. These public spaces are complemented by enhanced service, storage, and museum support spaces. The integration of resiliency and programming objectives results in seamless connections across the museum’s campus, while laying the groundwork for future improvements and growth. The first floor gains the multipurpose performance and learning center for lectures, rehearsals, art exhibitions, and educational programs. A monumental exterior stairway leads to the new second-floor event space, which accommodates ensemble performances, receptions, lectures, and exhibitions. The rooftop sculpture terrace, accessed from a third-floor gallery, provides views of the Gulf of Mexico.

“This achievement represents a remarkable coalescence of resilience, philanthropic support and sincere appreciation for the arts. We couldn’t be more thrilled to share these important exhibitions and reintroduce The Baker Museum as the cultural jewel it is to the community. We are so pleased to be once again operating with the full power of our multidisciplinary mission,” says CEO and President Kathleen van Bergen
