A campus for 'Srishti' is planned as a community of 3500 learners and practitioners coming together in one artistic collective. An institute for art, design & technology, the ethos of the campus revolves around Ethical, Aesthetic, and Productive Values which are pursued through Exploration, Action, Encounter and Reflection as Regenerative processes. With a distinctive vision to be a village of designers, the concept was based on appropriate relationships to and between the earth, sky, geology, topography, climate and living beings including humans. For an institute thriving with art the attention to scale, light & shade, colour & texture along with a variety of embodied spatial experiences a non-dominating atmosphere was created.

Srishti is part of an 80-acre campus, located on the outskirts of Bangalore, a developing Metropolitan city in South India. With the programme being divided into 7 “Houses”, the buildings are planned around a central 'community' court. With a non-dominating atmosphere, the houses transform with their occupants. Empowering a community of learners and practitioners. These houses stand together like a collective, almost porous opening up to the qualities of earth and sky. The campus, a living laboratory thriving with interactions and communications, leads to an organic and active learning environment which becomes a part of the campus at large.

The building footprint was optimized with a resource-efficient process to ensure minimal land disturbance characterised by materials that adhere to sustainability principles, justifying resource consumption. This approach helped us celebrate the local craftsmanship and honour construction traditions. Passive ventilation design strategies were incorporated in the planning stages for optimal thermal comfort. Shading devices, strategic window placements, and courts in transitional spaces helped improve the quality of light and ventilation. The building is GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment) compliant and waste management and recycling of building materials were followed and documented.

The design ethos encouraged simplicity and frugality as guiding principles which facilitated the learning spaces to be democratic, defying notions of hierarchy. These spaces spilled into courts and open pockets acting as breakout zones creating spaces of encounters and reflection. With a certain play of volume, open spaces encourage participation at multiple levels leading to non-linear learning and empowering individuals to take ownership of their journey. This dynamic environment is tailored to various teaching and learning methods. As an institute of art, these factors play an important role in fostering innovative artistic expression. With a non-dominating atmosphere, the houses transform with their occupants. Empowering a community of learners and practitioners. These houses stand together like a collective, almost porous opening up to the qualities of earth and sky. The legacy of the campus lives on in the stories etched into its canvases and the unfinished parcels taken over and transformed by its occupants. Hence the design narratives weave together to create an environment with nature as an ally and a refuge.

With over two decades of building vibrant and resilient communities of practice, Srishti has developed a new distinctive multi-dimensional approach to capability development with its new campus and is committed to building creative competencies ahead of the curve.
