We wanted to show the beauty and possibilities of sustainable building. Because in one way or another, people and especially the construction industry itself still have/had many prejudices against sustainable construction. It's expensive, elitist, corny, vague, impossible and so on. That is why we have worked intensively with more than 100 designers and manufacturers to make their material as beautiful as it is innovative. But it's not just about looks. We've created a sensory, immersive experience. By choosing the shape of an archetypal 2-bedroom house, we created an immediate appeal to a wide audience. You can walk in, touch the materials, read about them, ask our storytellers questions and when you leave the house you want to get started in your own home with everything you've learned.
That depends on the place where it’s located, the Exploded View Beyond Building is set up as a modular construction so it can be moved around. The exhibition premiered at Dutch Design Week 2021 where it was surrounded by other pavilions and art projects. After that traveled to Floriade Expo 2022 and is currently located at Kamp C in Westerlo (Belgium). This is a center for Sustainability and Innovation in construction. There are offices and the exhibition is set up next to a demo house made from 3D printed concrete.
The Exploded View Beyond Building is all about sustainability. Besides 100 materials such as acoustic mycelium tiles, EcoCocon, marmoleum flooring, Circular Matters Panels, algae plaster and seaweed tiles, The Exploded View Beyond Building experiments with different circular building methods like urban mining, 3D printing, detachability and modularity. The whole installation can be taken apart and built up somewhere else in no time. We created a traveling example of new ways of building. The Exploded View Beyond Building is an iconic exhibition in the form of a full-size house that is made entirely of biobased materials, circular construction methods and stories about the changing value system of which it is part.
The exhibition showcases over 100 biobased materials made by 100 partner designers and producers. All the materials showcased are applied on scale and functional within the building. They are walls, ceilings, floors, furniture, and even cutlery. Our goal was to show what is already possible when it comes to building with nature, and what will be possible in the very near future. Visitors can scan every material to read up on who made it, how it is made, how far the development of the material is and so on. This way we give the visitor a real insight into the possibilities of sustainable building. The house comes with storytellers on site and with tours and stories online. About all materials but also about how building sustainably contributes to the themes Health, Value, Neighborhood and Farming.
The other goal we had was to bring together producers, designers, builders, farmers, policy makers, artists, and knowledge institutes to share their insights, doubts, needs and fears so we can build together towards a real circular system of sustainable construction. To reach this goal we brought our partners together in The Embassy of Biobased and Circular Building. A network that meets, shares knowledge, invites others and builds together.
Willy Smit - WAM & VanDuren Bouwgroep (Construction company, partner): We participated because I have been thinking for years that we should do more with biobased materials. We want to look at how we can use that in our construction group. Jacques Vink (architect specialized in Nature Inclusive Design): It’s good that the house scale is 1:1. It shows how it works in real life. There are many materials that I find very special. For the experience, it’s good that you can feel everything.
Biobased Creations, by Company New Heroes, is a creative studio specialized in installations, projects and storytelling about the transition towards a regenerative and circular world. We consider all aspects of the transition, from green energy to biobased building, from a new economy to social innovations. We are a network of designers, researchers, artists and storytellers that strive for a new ecosystem that is fair and sustainable for man and nature.
