« La Ferme aux Escaliers », located in Burgundy, is a traditional stone building. The North facade is listed as an Historical Monument. The program was oversized compared to the existing building, so we proposed to raise the roof and create a new basement. Stones’ facades are restored. A solarium is added to the new roof. The light enters this new element to flood the atrium. It's the heart’s building around which all the project is centered. In this magical place, the wooden framework emerges. Activity boxes are suspended in the central void, as if they were floating. A concrete stair rolls up to first floor.
The existing building was a signal for the village due to the typical north facade and it's dimensions.
The aim of the project was to respect the building, and to add a contemporary touch. The project completely restored the old farm facade using traditionnal technics. A large window replace the old wood door of the barn. The roof is also entirely rebuild, using similar tiles.
Surrondings were created in order to highlight the building. New pathways permit to join the school.
The project promotes nobles and bio-sourced materials.
Local Burgundy stones were used to refurbish facades. Local wood was used to create the new framework and furnitures. Poured in place concrete with site materials was use for the new structure.
The project took the opportunity of this refurbishment to bring in bioclimatic design. A large solarium was added to the new roof for effective solar gain. An automatic suncontrol system is part of the solarium.
