This is an exhibition booth design project for ORGATEC TOKYO 2022, a leading international trade fair for office and property equipment in Japan and Asia. Considering the exhibition lasts three days and the size of the exhibition booth was 6 × 8 m, in addition to limiting the number of items displayed, we had to design a solution meets these conditions. We strove to offer a memorable experience to the visitors and showcase the appealing features of products. The unique items from Wendelbo Furniture and Shaw Contract resonate and stand out in the space, leaving a lingering impression on visitors.
For the spatial composition, our approach was to showcase the products like a performer on stage to draw out their potential appeal and individual character. Inspired by a spotlight on stage, the impressive setting that embodies our concept of “Rays of light falling along nylon threads” emphasizes the unique shape and texture of the Wendelbo chairs and subtly evokes the manufacturing process of the Shaw Contract carpets. In addition, we placed the brands’ names on the four corner pillars of the exhibition booth in an alternating stripe pattern, which draws the eye inward to the exhibits and attracts passers-by.
When you look closely at the threads and realise that they are the raw threads of the carpets, you see them in a different light. From a completely different perspective, you begin to see it not as a two-dimensional patterned floor covering, but as a collection of individual threads with a sense of depth. By recognising the exquisite work of the craftsman, we expect to discover a new value that was previously lost. This 'discovery of value' leads to the philosophy of sustainability, and looking at the carpets tells the story behind the production cycle of nylon. In the spatial composition of the exhibition, we sought to express and communicate the manufacturing process and concept through the weaving of a bunch of raw threads. The keywords are “Stage” and “Ephemeral beauty.” For this exhibition project, we strove to offer a memorable experience to the visitors and showcase the appealing features of products. The unique items from the two brands resonate and stand out in the space, leaving a lingering impression on visitors. We expect such encounters will later encourage visitors to revisit the brands. In this constantly evolving information-driven society, we believe meaningful experiences are one of the most effective forms of advertisement. In addition, the sunray-like threads also act as a partition that loosely separates each product and simultaneously highlights each of its presence. The two rods fixed on the ceiling and the carpet installed on the floor are connected with straight lines of raw thread. Considering the flow lines and circulation of the visitors, we adopted differently sized rods with tapered ends, which form gentle curves of finely lined threads. Meanwhile, we made many prototypes to work out the strength of the thread that would withstand the three-day exhibition and the best angles for the ceiling lighting that bring out the beautiful sheen and materiality of the threads. We believe that meaningful experiences are one of the most effective forms of advertising.
NIKKEN SPACE DESIGN took into account not only our wishes and thoughts, but also the characteristics of the space with the given conditions and requirements. They successfully reflected these in the design and created the ephemeral beauty that is unique to the space.
