Casa Spotify, being "glocal"

Spotify's Milan office represents the hub of a vast geographical region encompassing Eastern Europe and the entire Southern Mediterranean area.
In this context, the project had to go beyond the now inflated concept of being 'glocal' (Global+local) but embrace cultures ranging from Balkan, Baltic, Hispanic, Greek and Italian.
It is in fact a 'borderless' project, for which the design team led by e45 had to find a common home.

Hence the name 'Spotify House'.

The project is set in the new financial 'core' of the Milanese metropolitan area: from the skyscrapers occupied by high finance corporations to the lower buildings housing high-tech and e-commerce companies.

In this context, Spotify chose one of the urban villas in the Porta Nuova district, because it best suited the company's philosophy, which reaches almost half a billion people in the world from one of the least populated nations: to be big, you don't need to occupy so much space.

The project thrives on the permeability between outside and inside, thanks to terraces on different levels and with various exposures, which have been furnished to allow Spotify's employees to enjoy the city's new urban landscape. The view from these places is truly unique.

The project is part of a fully LEED certified district, specifically the building is LEED Platinum certified.

As far as the interior is concerned, every choice of furnishing elements and finishes has been made following contemporary sustainable design: materials with recycled and recyclable content, regional and readily available, low emission and healthy.

Emphasis was also placed on biophilia, incorporating green elements virtually everywhere, complementing the interior and exterior furnishings.

Crossing the threshold of the new spaces, the first impression one gets is of a green design environment.

"Casa Spotify' is an activity-based project. Together with the Swedish online streaming giant's in-house team of professionals, the design team carefully studied the functions and activities that would have to be accommodated within the offices to be set up in Milan.

The result led to unconventional spaces: there are in fact rooms for listening to podcasts and streaming content that required a careful and detailed study of the acoustics.
Then a large stage area for performances and presentations to the public or press, which was conceived with a design with a strong personality, versatility and reconfigurability, thanks also to its proximity to the kitchenette area, which has the dual function of supporting any catering and recreational area for employees. A large bioclimatic pergola extends the space towards an enjoyable outdoor area.

In the basement there is an area for fitness activities and recreation/games, with thought also given to those who have to reconcile maternity and work.

The office area has the typical contemporary configuration of open space and meeting rooms, huddle rooms and phone booths, with a meditation corner and project areas.

The top floor, entirely glazed, is a versatile training/meeting/conference space that can be separated by acoustic curtains, with a breathtaking view of the Milan skyline.

Immediately after Spotify's occupation of the spaces, we saw the project popularised on social media on an almost daily basis, a clear sign that the design had hit the mark: spaces with such an eye-catching design that they were spontaneously disseminated by people.

Curriculum
