THE NE[S]T_NATURE-SYMBIOTIC ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN AND DIGITAL FABRICATION

Waldenhouse is a treehouse, conceived as a union between a private panoramic deck intended for relaxation and outdoor well-being and a panoramic cabin reaching out towards the Apennine ridge of Monte Vettore, in the Monti Sibillini Park. The configuration of the elements is asymmetrical according to a phyllo-tactical arrangement, borrowed from the efficient way that plants have of best orienting their leaves, in order to guarantee the maximum exploitation of the native natural resources.

Through careful digital mapping of the tree using drones and laser scanners and its roots using geo-radar, the designers were able to virtually reconstruct the exact physiognomy of the host natural element, so that the construction of the architecture was in no way detrimental to the natural state of such a valuable pre-existing tree. The foundations are micro-piles, therefore designed to bring the least possible invasiveness to the root system of the plant. They have been positioned according to the best placement of the cabin and the terrace at a height, in order to not make it necessary to prune the interfering branches for adherence to the tree.

Waldenhouse Casarampi is, in addition to being a unique 'container of experiences', a perfect technological machine, in dynamic balance between the thermal differences of the host ecosystem and the necessary indoor comfort. This balance is possible thanks to high-performance envelopes and the best use of the natural resources of the place, such as sun exposure, orientation with respect to the prevailing winds and natural shading of the existing tree, which is not affected by the intervention, rather forms an integral and active part of it.

Waldenhouse prefers the use of living materials such as wood and plants, in continuous evolution and transformation, which are part of the cycles of the natural world and which respond to the stimuli that derive from it. Waldenhouse also makes use of simple and flexible compositional strategies, not only minimalist, but functional, attentive to form, performance and the ability to adapt to changes in environmental conditions. Like all living organisms, this bio-symbiotic Architecture is characterized by a metabolism, which is the resource management system, aimed at keeping both the architecture itself and those who live there alive, skilfully managing light, air, water , temperature and plant biomass in order to generate efficient energy flows.

We wanted to create a special place, a place away from the chaos, where you can rest and be surrounded by nature, where you can look at the stars before sleeping on summer nights and welcome the snow that falls on winter days. All in a small design space, born from the crazy idea of some boy and the brilliant hand of the architect Paolo Scoglio.

Curriculum

Designer specialized in nature-symbiotic architectural design in Italy and Abroad, for private clients, tour operators and public administrations. He has proudly achieved various international collaborations with Design Studios and leading companies in the highly innovative multi-material prefabrication field. A lecturer at IED and at Politecnico University in Turin and Milan, describes his architectural projects as “natural devices”, characterized by absolute symbiosis with the environment, by full landscape reversibility, by temporary living end use, inspired by “short stay, smart living” spaces, unique in their usage of high-tech and natural materials combinations. His itinerant design studio THE NEST, deals with and specializes in consultancy and prefabricated living unit projects all over the world, characterizing each design with minimal green attributes, that showcase the most advanced parametrical and bio-mimetically design.
