Tadao Ando

The architecture of HEM restaurant continues the style and concept of the museum. Ancient Chinese cosmology and philosophy believed the sky was round and divine; the earth was flat and square – this has had a profound influence on ancient architectural theories and design, and exerting an impact on Tadao Ando’s design of HEM. When Tadao Ando figuring out the restaurant design from the existing museum, a circular volume concentric to the gallery intersected with the long volume on the second floor. Finished with the same louver as the museum, a dramatic moment of light and shadow can be felt here. Ando hopes that visitors can engage in dialogue within the presence of nature in the landscape and the scenery of light and shadow.

HEM restaurant has private dining rooms, all with independent viewing windows to display the interplay of light and shadow in different moments of day and seasons. Outside HEM Restaurant is the horticultural landscape, intricately decorated with vigorous plants and contemporary art installations. Water is used as the main attractions and its reflection of building creates a beautiful illusion as if the basement of the building is elevated up to the sky. Verdant grass and Lingnan-styled trees and flowers are allocated to reach a united and aligned sense of arrangement. The pond and the grass are ideal for the display of contemporary installations to demonstrate an integrated sense of glamour, for all these spectacular views has given more characteristics to HEM restaurant.

Local sourcing: Apart from fair-faced concrete, other materials are purchased nearby. The slick concrete mixes local cement, fly ash, ore powder, gravel sand and admixtures. Illumination: The design of HEM’s architecture takes the good use of natural light as a supplement for illumination, reducing the use of electric lights. The architectural designs of fence roof and glass cut off the thermal radiation to the largest extent, reflecting the heat and reduce the energy dissipation of air-conditioners. The rate of energy conservation is as high as 50.04%. Plantation: In the garden, 13 types and 157 trees with over 12cm in diameter at breast height in total are planted to create a vigorous view and aim at providing a more natural, oxygen-rich environment for the local neighborhood.

Application of arc overhang eave The iconic outlook of HEM architecture is the overlapping arc overhang eave. The circular form gives a nod to the traditional Chinese architectural principles and creates a modern interpretation that reinvigorates architectural heritage from the east and west. From a birdview, these circles constructed the space of the building through ripple-like expansion, with each arc overhang eave expanding in precise calculation, showing an enriched variation effect on the interaction between spaces. Interplay of light and shadow Inside the restaurant, the interior design maintains Tadao Ando's exquisite interplay of light and shadow, with louvers at the corridor subtly immersing the external light and internal space. In HEM’s design, Ando draws inspiration from ancient Chinese philosophy, western style’s use of light and Lingnan terrain. The natural light around the restaurant is like playing games with visitors while echoing spaciousness, clarity and the calling of nature.
