In general Dubai city climate during summer feel hot and the ambient temperature around 50 deg. Celsius in top and ground side around 60 deg. Celsius, high humidity reaches up to 95%, sand storm occasionally and winter time too foggy. Dubai also very close to desert and seaside and the air passing through the sea enter into the land side contains salt of chloride and sulphate are also there in the air and soil of dust. The residential buildings and offices coated with paints during climate changes facing many problems like alligatoring, blistering, Cracking/Flaking, Dirt Pickup, Efflorescence/Mottling, Fading/Poor Colour Retention, Lapping, Poor gloss retention, Wrinkling, fungal and mould attack.
"Effect of Nanotechnology in Paint under Dubai climate condition" project study was done at Dubai central laboratory Department of Dubai Municipality. It specifically studied and implemented for Dubai environment. The climate changes during hot summer, foggy winter, humid weather and dust from motor cars taken to consideration. This project not only concern about paint defects, the study focused about public health and safe environment also. Extending the paints' lifetime by integrating nanomaterials in the formulation is one potential benefit which could over-compensate the larger impact of the production of Nano-paints compared to conventional ones.An improvement of the environmental benefits when using a Nano-paint depends much on its actual composition and functionality.
The initiative was taken to make Dubai become sustainable city as per Dubai Municipality Vision and Mission. A model house of same living condition experiment conducted at Dubai Central laboratory department. Dubai historical type model house and latest Residential model building was built and nanocoatings were applied to the walls with nano and without nano coatings. The model house was planned to construct the same way as living conditions of environment. The model house was exposed to sunlight and kept at open area in order to check the climate change properties. Different weather conditions like hot,foggy,storm,dark and warm weather exposed to model house.
The study of nanotechnology in paints test results shows improvement in Nano coat properties when compared with conventional paints (without Nano coat).The improvement in properties are color fading, Solar reflective index, Light reflectance value and dirt pickup resistance. From the above study it is clearly understand that colorfading,dirtpickup, Solar reflectance index (SRI) and Light Reflectance Value (LRV) test results indicates Nano paints are better solutions for paint defects during changes in climatic condition when compared without Nano coat. The test results of Nano coat indicates colorfading,dirtpickup, Solar reflectance index (SRI) and Light Reflectance Value (LRV) saves routine maintenance cost, extending the paints' lifespan, preserving assets and sustainable to the environment. The Nanocoating technology study results from DCLD helpful in other regions or other countries facing similar environment problem can use the nanocoating technology on paints. Cool pigments technology present in the nano paints protect total solar energy attack on walls by reflecting solar energy and reduce temperature inside of buildings and make comfort living conditions to public. Use of sustainable biomass ensured binder and recyclable packaging materials instead of fossil fuels in nano paints reduces carbon emission and safe to environment. Using nano paints no adverse effect on environment due to free of heavy metals, less Volatile Organics and formaldehyde content.
