Huazhan campus of Gaoan Road No. 1 Primary School is located at the intersection of Longwu Road and East Huazhan Road in Xuhui District, Shanghai. With a compact site, this 40-class school was built under a high FAR of 1.4. The superposition of area index, site limitations, and building codes solidifies the layout, leaving little room for changes. The compact site reduced the area for playgrounds and green venues, which would make daily educational activities more confined to standardized classrooms - these realities concerned architects about the rigidity of the campus. Therefore, how to create a lively educational space in this "only layout" became the most difficult yet meaningful challenge in this project.
We divided the four to five-story massing into four parts and set up passages and staircases between them, so that teachers and students can see the scenery of different spaces inside and outside the campus when they pass by. We also lifted the gymnasium to the third floor, and lowered the small theater to semi-underground level and placed green slopes and grandstands on periphery, and created a covered sports field on the second floor. This semi-outdoor space is connected to the gymnasium atrium vertically, and connected to the playground and the central courtyard horizontally.
Huazhan campus of Gaoan Road No. 1 Primary School is located in Shanghai, China. With a FAR of 1.4, the compact site accommodates one 200-meter track and field, two classroom buildings, one office building and a multi-function building which houses a multifunction hall, a covered sports field, a gymnasium and other activity spaces. Through the design strategies, a layered connection between the central courtyard and the surrounding space were established, which expanded the spatial perception of the campus. Through careful articulation of the structural system and prefabricated units, a concise, regular and hierarchical spatial order was created, which not only satisfied the normative requirements of various teaching spaces, but also increased the flexibility and spirituality of school. In the limited building area, the diversification of the circulation space can help to promote vitality of communication. The rope stair in multi-function building, the semi-outdoor "cabins", and the corridor equipped with stools, schoolbag cabinets and reading panels all provide unique public spaces. In this project, Scenic Architecture Office explored the diversification and differentiation of teaching and communication spaces, and imputed more physical and mental care into this campus.
Through careful articulation of the structural system and prefabricated units, Scenic Architecture Office’s design not only satisfied the normative requirements of various teaching spaces, but also increased the flexibility of the unit space, where we can inject more spirituality into this primary school.
Scenic Architecture Office was founded in Shanghai in 2004. In any project undertaken, they start from the needs of body-mind, nature and society, and try to establish a balanced and dynamic relationship between these aspects through architectural ontology to carve a new identity for contemporary architecture niched between Chinese tradition and the future. Scenic Architecture Office’s works have earned awards like Architizer A+ Award, Archdaily Annual China Architecture Award, WAACA Award, Far Eastern Architectural Design Award, etc. Their works have also been invited to partake in various exhibitions, including the Solo show “Translated Traditions – Public Courtyards and Urban Platforms” held by Berlin Aedes Architecture Forum, Venice Architecture Biennale, Milano Triennial, and exhibitions held by London Victoria and Albert museum, MAK, NAI, etc. In 2022, the office had its first monograph “Rebirth of form-type” published by Images Publishing Group worldwide.
