The Sui-Tang Dynasties Grand Canal National Cultural Park, where the museum is located, is within the scope of the Luoyang City Site of Sui-Tang Dynasties . With a large number of Tang style buildings planned around it, our design attempts to break free from the encirclement and constraints of the Tang style and seek different perspectives on the history and culture of the Sui-Tang dynasties. We seize the technical characteristics of the Sui-Tang Dynasties Grand Canal, an ancient water conservancy project, and take the arch bridge structure erected on the Luohe River as the prototype. We use modern construction techniques to replace the concrete imitation of traditional styles, thereby achieving a dialogue between ancient and modern civilizations.

The site is located on the north side of the Luohe River, and Luohe River and Chanhe River embankments isolate the site from the waterfront space of the canal, forming an isolated concave site feature. In order to restore the hydrophilicity of the site, strengthening the spatial dialogue between the building and the Grand Canal has become the primary issue. We adopt a form strategy, which is arching the main functional space of the museum at an elevation of 7m, thereby achieving a visual connection with the waterfront space.

The site is a triangular land located at the intersection of the Luohe River and the Chanhe River. The layout of the museum echoes the central axis of the Tang style architectural complex. In terms of internal spatial organization, we adopt a progressive functional spatial layout , forming a complete and continuous exhibition hall unit and a diverse internal spatial experience. In terms of internal functional design, we practice the latest concepts of contemporary museum, and break through the closed exhibition mode of traditional museums. Except for exhibits sensitive to temperature and humidity, most exhibition halls adopt an open layout, integrating with public spaces and park landscapes, making the museum a true urban living room. The rational spatial order is highly integrated with the structure and equipment, especially the dual application of structural design. In the plan organization, an effective bidirectional seismic structural system is formed by using transverse and longitudinal interwoven arch shear walls. In the section organization, the upper roof prestressed concrete suspension plates+end concrete "Tangwadang" and the arch shear wall at the lower base form a closed shear wall transmission system. The dual plan characteristic forms a clear indoor space structure through the concrete wall, while the structural relationship of section duality endows specific historical memory through the material combination of ceramics and black bricks.

The selection of building materials emphasizes the principle of locality, which is "made in Luoyang". A large number of improved Luoyang tricolor ceramic plate are used indoors and outdoors. We repeatedly discussed samples with local craft artists in Luoyang during the design process, combining traditional handmade pottery with modern design and processing techniques to promote the innovative development of Luoyang's traditional ceramic industry.

Curriculum

Rurban Studio is an independent studio under Tongji Architectural Design (Group) Co., Ltd., presided by Professor Li Li from College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University,. Its business scope covers architectural design, historical building renovation and rural practice, especially in the museum design field. In recent years, the studio has presided over the design of a large number of representative projects such as the East Shanghai Museum, Tibet Art Museum, Erlitou Site Museum of the Xia Dynasty. Through widely distributed architectural practices, Rurban Studio responds to the complex dimensional and spatiotemporal differences in the development and transformation process of Chinese architecture, and seeks possible paths for local construction within the constraints.
