Layers is not only a response to Lesley Lokkos' question “What does it mean to be "an agent of change?" but also a conceptual depiction of the architectural approach that we take at the inception of all our built work. Having designed and built a 100% off-the-grid housing project in Burundi, Africa, we are quite familiar with thinking about issues of de-carbonization, de-colonization, public participation with art and transfer of knowledge. Our intent in this installation was not only to define these critical issues, but to discuss approaches to develop broad range solutions. The audio conversation, light box and natural materiality attempt to bring viewers into the discussion, while the circular forms located on the floor discuss possible methods to address these complex problems.

Our environmental installation is about how cultural architectural projects can become one with their surrounding landscapes. Although it is specifically a display of conceptual ideas, it literally lays out on the floor of the exhibit multiple architectural solutions that we can consider to sustainably embed our cultural projects into their context. Whether researching native ancestry, structuring forms with local mass timber, or powering environments with site specific geothermal heat, our cultural projects must integrally unite with the land.

Efthalia Rentetzi, author of the article, "A critical reading of the 18th Venice Architecture Biennale" in the May 31, 2023, issue of Juliet Magazine speaks to our installation's strong consideration of sustainability when she says, "...the vital exhibition Layers by Louise Braverman rendered through the assembly of images and organic materials that generates a story with a light pop flavour. The American architect uses the metaphor of the tree and its roots that creep into the ground, alluding to the architectural identities which, interconnected over time , lead to awareness of the nuances present in society."

Layers is a light filled environmental installation composed of a large-scale glowing light box, three-dimensional imagery, audio dialogue and organic material that is situated at the Time Space Existence Palazzo Bembo exhibit at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale. It is an experiential exhibition where a repeating loop of audio dialogue runs parallel to three-dimensional imagery. The exhibit depicts a moment in time in the woodlands where image, materiality and oral conversation intertwine. Together they address pivotal issues of ancestry, de-carbonization and public participation with art in our contemporary public realm. The physical metaphor of a tree with its hyper-exaggerated jute roots splaying three-dimensionally into the earth displays the need to incorporate critical contemporary architectural investigations early on in our architectural design process. Issues of ancestry research, geothermal heat, modular building, sustainable mass timber construction among others must be incorporated into our built form. Layers is a clarion call to our communities to investigate the interconnected architectural components of our cultural arts institutions today and in the future.

Although we do not have a specific quote, we are thankful to the European Cultural Centre who has invited us over the years to create multiple environmental installations at the Venice Biennale.

Curriculum

By examining the metaphor of a tree with its hyper-exaggerated jute roots splaying three-dimensionally in the earth, Layers investigates the interconnected architectural components of our cultural arts institutions today and in the future.
