TIANJIN TIANHUA NORTHERN ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

Origin & Background: The project is situated in the Beijing Pinggu Red tourist scenic area, which retains many historical sites. The site is based close to Jingdong Grand Canyon tourist scenic area, located at the junction of the plain and valley entrance, back against mountains and facing the plain in the south, surrounded by rich landscape resources. We were assigned to renovate a rural building into a tourism station that stands at the entrance of the scenic area. We hope to restore the function of the traditional rural market with the respect to preserving the original buildings as much as possible. At the same time, it will be a public service infrastructure that accepts reception and tourist transit functions. We expect the renovated building could become a plain and comfortable common space where people could escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, also continues the collective memory of the village. Concurrent Design Principles: Based on the research of sites and existing buildings, responds to the traditional market and tourist reception functions ask. During the renovation practice of the red valley market, it is expected to become a model of scenic area reconstruction that can not only solve the demands of new functions but also retain the traditional rural settlement form and features. Sorting out the settlement and cultural context of the village, introducing visitors to the great scenery hidden in the mountains, injecting vitality and activating the self-supporting ability of the village. Renovation Strategy: In the face of the complex architectural situation and various functional requirements, the space is organized more effectively by placing a courtyard system composed of a "wall-volume-corridor". the depth of existing buildings is complemented by the new construction part, and in addition, adds a scenic corridor to connect the various functional courtyards. Maximize the usage degree of original structure and facade materials, wild growth disorder spaces are reorganized and reused as a rural cultural tourism station, to continue the local collective memory and promote the peace spirit to the outside. The original building was usual brick and concrete structure house. A thermal insulation layer and block wall are added inside. The thermal performance of the new building will be improved and resolving conflicts where the old architecture cannot support the distribution of the new functions. Meanwhile, the available space will be further expanded through a "Juxtaposition Spaces" measure. The series of juxtaposition spaces create certain connections in between the old building and new courtyard. Also significantly improve light environment and ventilation by adding clerestories. Conclusion: After the activation and function transformation of the disorder space, our project is expected to be a glimmer for the future development of the village. The red valley market practice will be an opportunity to remould what is the humanistic quality and spiritual connotation of rural architecture and cultural connection should be. Also meeting the dual needs of rural residents for material and spiritual culture, and strengthening the construction of rural public infrastructure.
