The project client is a high-tech company dedicated in developing, manufacturing, and selling intelligent gas information system platforms, and they request new demands for a new headquarters structure. With the project conditions, site context and company culture of practicality, precision and economy, the heart of the design development centers on the key element: a brand modern, iconic, shareable, green, and efficient headquarters. Target 01: A corporate image-oriented compound office space. More than the office building’s basic functions, the headquarters has become a new element of soft power in economic competition. The design integrates the abstract attraction into a functionalist building with minimalist appearances and detailed spaces, and offers a real journey from the ground floor to the upper floors, which reveals the image of the company in modern functionalist, and gradually form a differentiated image of the listed industrial intelligent manufacturing company. The building volume is divided into three parts according to the site’s condition and design needs: the functional office volume sits on the east side with an extroverted white box to assimilate the positive conditions, and a continuous zigzag hollow platform, which runs from the 4th to the 10th stories, not only separates the façade scale vertically, but also acts as an extension area for the horizontal plan; the service auxiliary volume with communication circulation is an introverted black box to resolve the negative conditions on the west; and between the two staggered boxes stands a 50-meter-high communal atrium. There’s a 12-story atrium at the building center that serves the different floors with glass boxes of multi functions, including meeting, negotiations, interactions and cafe. The different-sized steps and resting platforms lend multi functionality to the atrium – exhibiting, interacting, sharing, and congregating – and enhance the possibility of sharing information and creative ideas within the company. Target 02: The economic and innovative facade design makes the headquarters identify itself and stand out in the area. The selection of the materials and structures of three volumes is related to their functions. The office volume has a unitized white gradient dot glazed glass curtain wall, which creates an unusual skin shape. The auxiliary volume is clad in black metal perforated panels. From the exterior to the interior, a dark perforated board runs, which satisfies the façade's impact, as well as inside ventilation and illumination. The detailed and modern facade makes it stand out in the building groups to establish its own corporate image. The glaze dots in glass curtain wall patterned rationally, from two ends to the middle part of the human visual field, thus reducing energy usage, while the window views unaffected and the glass itself showing a variety of opaque, translucent, and transparent states as the visual angle changes. The 5mm perforated panels with ‘12mm aperture, 8mm spacing, 32.65% perforation rate’ in combination with two transverse ribs satisfies the façade's impact, as well as inside ventilation and illumination, which runs from the outside facade to the inside atrium. Target 03: Well-balanced in sustainability and human comfort. The volume strategy meets the local various qualities and function needs. The functional layout allows for the best possible environmental views and lighting, and the 50-meters-high atrium makes it possible to achieve the maximum of the lighting and ventilation, which affects the indoor environment quality and reduces the electric energy. The east facade's continuous zigzag hollow platform, which runs from the 4th to the 10th stories, serves as the sky garden for the employees. Because of its intensity, effectivity, and order, the most essential sustainable characteristic of how changeable the space is that it may change functions to meet the variability, thereby creating a more shareable, greener, and more efficient office building to stimulate the communication and interaction everywhere. Importantly, the inner yard makes it possible to achieve the maximum of the environmental lighting and ventilation, which affects the indoor environment quality and reduces the electric energy. The design gives priority to the new connections among people themselves, and between people and architecture, and respond both issues of the new age and traditional humanism, which makes it more efficient, activity-rich and futuristic. Target 04: The close collaboration of architectural, interior, and landscape teams in all stages of design and construction. As well as the design team all worked with curtain wall, structure, electromechanical design units, ensuring a cohesive design concept in building from, functional layout and space operation. The facade unit, the ceiling metal mesh plate, the tiny office room’s scale and the entry square’s pavement are all in the same module, which regulates quality and reflect the accuracy and orderly character. All the inside facade are constructed by curtain wall design unit, as well as outside facade, integrating the outdoor experience into the indoor.
