Sky Deck is a gastronomic concept that shifts the culinary trends of community social gathering. Distinct from a food hall, Sky Deck is a place to immerse in a communal dining experience with a collection of interconnected restaurants in one vast space. Located in the San Diego coastal town of Del Mar and situated atop a local organic market, Sky Deck’s 26,700 square foot expansive space integrates 6,360 square feet of adjoining al fresco decks and patios offering various outdoor communal areas. The food hall showcases local chef-driven San Diego restaurant concepts that offer a flavor of global influence. This innovative collective blends individual restaurants that surround a central luxe-cocktail bar, a co-working café, and an elevated beer garden named Brewers Deck. The multi-level, indoor/outdoor experience offers nine unique dining concepts transporting visitors around the globe with a unique dining experience. Sky Deck’s main feature is an expansive 35’ X 60’ skylight that guides daylight and views of the evening sky into the center of the space. A key design for Sky Deck was the concept of a “diorama”. This design concept was achieved through the creation of a series of large found object art installations, paired with a 120’-0” large-scale mural commissioned by a local artist. These art elements are creatively curated as a collection of ‘nautical industrial’ art that echoes Del Mar’s beaches and San Diego’s port city lineage. In keeping with the maritime theme, four boats are suspended from the ceiling along with netting, buoys, pulleys and fish carved out of driftwood. The boats and other objects that are suspended from the ceiling are described as “found objects” with nautical connections. Along with found objects skylight technology, murals, environmental graphics, and lighting were used to create an authentic and memorable experience for visitors. All common areas in the project offer many public amenities and hospitality to the community. The common wash area features a steel barn door integrated with wall and ceiling murals for an intricate layering of found objects transformed into sculptural art. Sky Deck is a culinary collection where each area has its own unique characteristics, creating the sensation that diverse experiences are interconnected. Its unique multi-zone, multi-story spatial layout creates an environment of discovery and revelation that invites its local neighborhood and the broader community to immerse into.
