The project is located in Lishui City, and it is unusual to find an art center in such a tiny town. To design it, we must first answer three questions: who the building is for, where the building is built, and what the building is. The design and story were motivated by the uniqueness of the geographical surroundings, as well as the tension between aesthetic purpose and urbanity. Target 01: WHO the building is for? The building should reflect the unique urbanity of this town, not only for art lovers in the surrounding area, but also for the everyday requirements of local inhabitants. The mapping strategy is to make a floating exhibition volume to feed art lovers during gallery hours, while the ground floor is designed to serve inhabitants for the majority of the time, resulting in a 13,0000 square meter enclosed building form. The building's shape allows it to establish itself as an architecture-link, and its location of the high-density neighborhood’s center makes it provide a new accessible square and participate in the enormous pedestrian space: its porous and open ground floor becomes an urban hall. Target 02: WHERE the building is built? The building's context is the subject of the second concept. The property is in a conventional residential district, with natural mountains and a river nearby. It has opened to the public with an entry to develop a strong civic presence and more fluid interaction with the surrounding community, in order to create an exciting dialogue and connection with nature and historic housings and alleys. Moreover, it enables universal access to the central area and rooftop observation platform, which may be enjoyed by anyone. As for the materials, concrete with bamboo formwork, cement slab tile, wood grille, wood veneer, and glass, among other materials, are used in the building. To create openness and affinity, the commercial volume on the first level of the building primarily employs glass and rotatable wood-colored metal profile components. The second and third floors are mostly constructed of concrete with bamboo formwork to create a sculptural continuous body. The quantity of wood grille and wood veneer is raised on the basis of concrete in the inner square, which improves the living atmosphere and gives users a kind and accessible sensation. Target 03: WHAT the building is? The building’s function is inextricably linked to the previous two. An exhibition hall, a conference hall, commercial rooms, offices, and other support rooms will be housed in the new building. The second-floor functions independently as a professional art gallery, with fundamental modern art display conditions, a pleasant circulation, and bright inside spaces. And the commercial volumes are established along the streets, as well as serving the everyday needs of the residents. The whole building height is less than 24 meters, and the overall height of the slope of the entire foundation is a moderate slope from northwest to southeast. The primary body of the construction is made up of frame-shear walls. Cast-in-place reinforced concrete beams and slabs make up the floor. The art center we proposed is accessible to the public on a daily basis and has a local common settings. More important than providing professional art exhibition functions is providing rich and grounded space for daily public activities for local residents, forming closer communication and fixed and lasting art interactions with town life, and improving and activating the life of small towns invisibly.
