In Torba, close to Bodrum Airport and being one of the major destinations of Blue Voyage, the land is easily accessible from sea and by land routes. With reference to topography and nature of the region, angles of sun, winds and greenery, slopes of the terrain guided the land use of the program, housing hotel, private villas and social areas as constituents of the summer resort. Modesty has been core of the design decision with reference to the attitude of local architecture and nature, supported by use of local building material. Taking inspiration from neighboring old towns and their relation to human and non-human world, design seeks to implement strategies that praise ‘genius loci’, in the layout, voids and corridors, open spaces and their relations, coastal use and overall settlement ideas. Raising immediately from sea, topography, clad with Mediterranean foliage and pine trees, defines the design. Strong in architectural intentions, yet perfectly blending within setting. Trees of the site were documented, classified and analyzed, and the project was designed and –where necessary- revised with precision. Stone walls starting at gardens as a part of landscape become an integral of interior in continuity. Designed as elongation of natural topography, benefiting existing slope and terraces of land, 2-storey buildings generally planned with top entry. This setup also provides maximum sea view and autonomy / privacy without cutting off the view of the building behind by not going up another floor. In the sloping topography of more than 50%, 38 long-term residence units, mostly duplex villas, all flexible and dividable, with 2, 3 or 4 bedrooms. Aiming to create progressive adoptable spaces, life around a courtyard, living outdoors has been the focus. A “house complex” is made up of several masses connected to each other. Patios link all units and people. Wherever possible, the topography is benefited and the units are embedded in the terrain. Integrated with nature, light, and breeze, a mixture of semi-open and open spaces is the core of design. Being one step away from greenery and sea, even when staying indoors, one feels as part of nature, the artless setting. Facilities by the shore are designed on the rocks, touching but not harming them, reaching the sea. Stones, excavated on the site, are re-purposed, in façades, pedestrian walkways, retaining walls and structural elements. Materials are locally sourced and utilized “raw”, including wood and reed, which in turn, provides a built environment that seeks low maintenance, weathering aesthetically. The texture and color of the concrete is a direct result of aggregate from the site, binding buildings even more to their backgrounds. The project, embedded in its setting, is inspirational in how it blends in the landscape. The balances of light and shadow, vibration and tranquility, sub-rosa and communal have been practiced in the physical existence of the project.
