REPORT, Agro-livestock laboratory in Xinzo de Limia, Ourense (Spain).
BARGE BOUZA ARQUITECTURA

The strategic approach of the Agro-livestock laboratory project, (carried out in Xinzo de Limia, Ourense, Spain) assumes the location of the plot as a basic determining factor; very close to the sports hall, a building of considerable size and scale and delimited on its north side by the Campo da Feira, equipment very degraded constructively.

In these circumstances the building emerges as a small facility, with a agro-livestock laboratory program, classrooms and offices, where it is intended to generate its own atmosphere around the courtyard-garden, trying to merge the existing trees through the creation of abstract volumes. The dialogue is thus sought by contrast, establishing an articulation of the building with the void generated by subtraction, incorporating the access space to the interior of the project and in turn closing it with the cantilevered cube that works as host and in turn as limit of the courtyard , allowing the building to be isolated from an extremely aggressive environment.

Thereby, light control is sought through the use of large vertical granite pieces that allow solar control, generating slight distortions in the different frames in the vision of the surrounding landscape. In this way the interior acquires a great plastic expressiveness by the effects generated by the shadows projected in the interior at different times of the day and throughout the seasons.

The project had a material execution budget of 125.00 Euros, the finishes and materials were reduced to the minimum: white lime plastering and granite pieces on the façade, polished concrete floors and white paint in interiors, exterior aluminum carpentry and cedar wood interiors, deployee mesh on railings and finally galvanized corrugated sheet steel on steps.

In this project, stone was used as a “brise-soleil” element by using continuous pieces from floor to ceiling, 25cm thick, placed intermittently to generate semi-transparent perspectives and visual frames at different angles.

The façade combines the use of mortar plastering in contrast to stone, setting a clear symbiosis between both materials without joints that mark the composition.

They have been awarded with several international prizes like Honourable Mention International biennial Architecture Prize “Barbara Cappochin” 2013, FAD awards Architecture Prize 2013, the 3rd International Prize “Menhir” for European Union Architects 2003 and selected in international competition "44 young architects international" studies with work built of europe and america 2007. And national prizes like selected XI Biennial of spanish architecture and planing 2011, 1st Prize COAG 2011 and Special Mention Prize COAG 2004. Other awards worth pointing out are 1st prize national competition for the building of the Cultural and Ethnographics Center of Mandeo river A Coruña 2011, 2nd prize national competition for the building of a 50 units housing neighbourhood in Covadonga, Ourense 2006.
