Yazgan Design Architecture
Gazi University Laboratories located within the campus of Gazi University in Ankara, Turkey, is designed to complement and overcome the needs of the University’s Faculty of Science. By providing additional classrooms, seminar halls, auditoriums and a variety of laboratories, these needs were hoped to be satisfied.
The pre-determined and stereotypical image of huge, under lit and isolated laboratories is aimed to be replaced with spacious, sunlit spaces which are in direct relationship with inside and outside, therefore creating a better experience for the students and/or the instructors utilizing the laboratories. The idea of bringing nature, green and sunlight into the workspaces is achieved by the use of semi-open greenhouses that come between the masses. Thus, the building is also envisaged to work beyond its main function and host social activities as well, creating a multifunctional dimension within itself.
While the use of hipped roof achieves a similar language with the architecture of the context, it also allows for the creation of high-volume workspaces, thereby supporting the design decision of replacing the stereotypical laboratory design with more open, spacious and enjoyable areas.
Throughout the design process, the hierarchies of needs were taken into consideration, and the functions were separated and organized according to this hierarchy, as well as their programs. Therefore, the main organizational principle was to restructure the given program into two subprograms as labs, being hands-on activities, and lecture halls. This differentiation within the programs can be followed from the differentiation on the massing of the project, as it reflects on it. A central glass axis, which basically works as the main entrance and circulation - social area, becomes the main organizer distinguishing and unifying the two subprograms at the same time. While the program and social areas are on the front, the service areas are gathered together at the back with a linear circulation hall, constituting an overall rational scheme, and support the idea of hierarchy within the process.
The variety of laboratories and lecture halls are sized according to their needs and organized in a way that relevant spaces come together. This way, a sense of hierarchy is, again, supported and a better user-experience is achieved in terms of easy adaptation to the design.
