Pedroso House, An Old Monastery Becomes A Single-Family House

The single-family house is located on the old land that used to belong to the Pedroso Monastery, in Vila Nova de Gaia, a municipality belonging to the Porto Metropolitan Area. The old monastery of the Order of São Bento was founded in 867 and after the withdrawal of the Jesuits in 1759, the property was divided and then was sold. The church of the Monastery remains today as the main church in the parish of Pedroso and in 2014 the set of buildings was classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
The land is very steep and covers two large lots of the subdivision, designed with the objective of safeguarding the existing vegetation and trees. At the limits of the land it is not possible to build walls, therefore only a metal fence will be placed, and the topography of the land will be maintained, preserving all the trees.
The upper floor of the dwelling, with the living and the dining room, the kitchen, two bedrooms and two suites, is located in the South side, at the street level, which allows access to the land. On the lower floor, which is partially buried in the land, we have the garage, the laundry room, the wine cellar, the guest room, the games/cinema room and the large indoor pool.
The lower floor with the granite stone facades of the region has a large patio with a helical staircase. They allow access to the pool's roof terrace. The terrace communicates with the living room and the kitchen and allows you to extend these spaces to the outside at the level of the treetops.
On the outside, the house is entirely covered with the ETICS system (External Thermal Insulation Composite System).
Inside, the Riga Nova wooden floor runs through all spaces and is heated by the hydraulic underfloor heating system. In the bathrooms, the white marble stone covers the walls and floors. The tops of kitchen countertops and toilets are designed with Solid Surface Krion in pure white. The walls and ceilings are all covered with plasterboard. The carpentry of the house is all in MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) lacquered in high gloss, also in white. Outside the floors of the balconies and terrace are in white marble stone and the car access route in granite cubes of the region.
The energy systems applied to the house are renewable, with the installation of solar panels to capture energy from the sun, used for heating sanitary waters and also in the production of electricity for the use of housing, which can be used in artificial led lighting, and in the heat pump for heating the space through hydraulic floors.
