Andrea Vattovani Architecture
The project RETRO 67 is inspired by the appearance of the old town of Beirut. The architects of AVA reinterpreted several elements of the new building’s surrounding environment in aim to communicate its strong relation to the city. To them urbanistical aspects were important to underline the perspectives of a street, in site plan it is made clear that, while designing, they respected the structure of the city and improved it.

A key element is the round corner. In Beirut are several round buildings that seem to be one of the characteristics for its architecture. The curved façade of RETRO 67 is a reminder of this element but also a solution to solve the unfriendly shape of the plot. AVA created a strong design language for this concept, that remains very simple and coherent with the studio’s style while reflecting what impressed them the most about Beirut.

Due to Beirut’s high number of sunshine hours, people all around the city tend to protect their apartments and balconies from direct light and heat, by using the oldest man-made sunshade –The Curtains. The Curtains are one of the essential design elements creating RETRO 67‘s unique identity. They bring in the connection to the local context and tradition but also serve as a light element improving functionality and life quality of the residents. On sunny days, they prevent the building from overheating and during the night they contribute additional privacy to the flats.

The Greenery incorporated into the unique design of RETRO 67 is featured on every terrace integrating flower pots to offer the possibility of growing a vertical garden, which gives the open façade a lively look.

The building consists of retail area at the ground floor, duplex apartments on floors 1-6, simplex apartments on the 7th floor and a penthouse apartment on the last floor. The apartments style is based on creating a loft-like feeling in a compact and efficient layout. It combines traditional design elements with modern interior solutions to provide the residents with highest possible living quality. The duplex apartments feature a double-height ceiling, which makes it possible to create various layout combinations. Each apartment also has a generous terrace, sometimes with an additional outdoor connection between the two loft levels.

The penthouse combines the loft style with the Mediterranean flair. It features a 270° view over the city and a pool on the terrace to cool down on those hot summer evenings.

Being an architect is a delicate and multifaceted task. One must not only be an excellent technician, but also have artistic, creative qualities, tied in with patience and amazing listening skills, not short of a psychologist. Furthermore, amazing organisational skills, and an acute awareness of the influence one exudes on peoples’ lives are also of utter importance.

We aspire to create timeless architecture by reducing form, efficient and functional use of materials and at the same time remaining conscientious of costs.
