Background
Existing Xi Feng Grand Hotel is situated at the west side of Xi Feng Road, the core are of the city Baoji. It was a uncharacteristic building with white tiles veneered the whole building envelop, a typical 80's and 90's style. The Hotel needs a full scale upgrade that not only pursues an image for the new era but also boosts the city's deeply rooted culture that originates from Zhou Dynasty, which is also a challenge for our design.

Design principle
The new renovation will be modern architecture, to begin with. Some of the characteristics of ancient Zhou architecture are borrowed and applied to the new building. 1. Timber as a material becomes a main element for the architecture, the interior and even the landscape serving to bring the three together. 2. Red as a prevalent and popular color in Zhou era is introduced to the architecture and the interior. The application of red color has a subtle approach. It is painted on sides of mullions and structural elements on the facade so that the tone is perceived via various angles and it is constantly changing, appearing and vanishing. 3. The juxtaposition of traditional and modern elements in the atrium space so "heaven and earth" motifs coexist in the same space, a salute to the ancient.

Architectural renovation
The old existing building was in a poor shape and original forms are rather chaotic. We introduced a constant and smooth envelop to integrate various building masses and facades.
The solids and voids behind architectural facades are fully integrated by the skin. At some edge, especially the entrance area linear vertical green plantations are placed. Its adjacent architectural skin becomes perforated or opened with louvers. Thus this constant flowing interface applies a special gesture to the building by working as the building envelop, a garden wall or a viewport through which the outside landscape is framed. The detailing of the skin allows dynamic shadows and shades casted on the building to give it more depth and layers.

The same principle and language apply to the interior so that the outside and inside are unified together. The smooth exterior interface flows and ends to the interior. The wood and red art installations are the focal points at the interior.

The central atrium is filled with air and sunlight. Continuously curved steps are around the sunken display area, which is also surrounded by an artificial bamboo alter. Modern furniture mixes with traditional styled ones. At the center on the upper level, the painting ‘heavenly gods’ runs the entire perimeter of the space, to echoes the Zhou Culture aesthetics. The central atrium becomes a dramatic stage.

There are many "dramatic stage" design at many other key spaces. It is worth mentioning that the red art installations (designed by STUDIO A+) that appeared in many interior spaces interpret the traditional ‘lucky cloud’ in red color and in a very modern language.
