443 Greenwich Street, originally built as a book bindery by Charles C. Haight in the 19th Century, has been restored and reimagined into 53 urban residences, preserving Tribeca’s architectural heritage while situating itself in its modern context. Characteristic elements of the landmark structure were retained including its shell, as well as its brick and oak beams. The design, inspired by the existing structure’s architectural details and grand proportions, celebrates the original construction while introducing crafted details that complement modern materials to heighten its residential adaptation.

The design of the interiors actively engages with the volume and scale of the entire structure. Materiality and craft play a significant role in interior design of the residences, alluding to the former industrial building, while adapting to contemporary living. Celebrating the historic structure, the original 100-year old oak beams have been restored in the residential plan, framing and unifying the design elements that distinguish each unique residence. They serve as totems of proportion, solidity, and strength, as well as history, functioning as a continual reminder of the layered history of the building. Materials used within the apartments: antiqued natural bronze for faucets and hardware, blackened aged metal to enclose foyer walls and reclaimed wood for vanities, all are consistent with the building's history.

At the heart of each residence is the kitchen. Large welcoming kitchens are open to the life of the apartments. The design is centered on the “hearth walls”, consisting of a millwork wall of open shelving that frame a crafted metal hearth, defining the cooking center. The kitchens feature custom cabinets and open Millwork shelves as well as full height pantries that maximize storage opportunities. The cabinets and shelves are finished in a walnut-stained white oak cabinetry with clear maple interior surfaces and bronze hardware, creating a contrast with the stainless-steel appliances and a balance between modern and classical design. The countertops and backsplash are a dark Basaltina lava stone, which blends with the wood cabinetry. Large islands of stainless steel are topped with marble that are accented by polished metal legs and strap details. The kitchen island draws residents around the table for activity, making the kitchen a center not only for cooking, but for gathering and celebrating.
