noa* (network of architecture) rethinks an existing city apartment and conceive it completely new from spacial concept to the smallest details of interior design.

The city apartment in the centre of Bolzano (IT) got completely renovated. There’s not much left from the existing spaces: All internal walls and windows have been removed, floors have been ripped out – only two static important pillars were left.

The apartment has changed hands, because of a change of generation... The existing room layout wasn’t meeting the new owner’s needs, so we opted for a completely free and radical space concept.

The centrepiece of the new spacial concept is formed by an „architectural meuble“ that grows through the apartment like a worm and creates diverse zones. It never touches the ceiling, but keeps a certain distance that conveys a feeling of totally open and flying space.

The furniture consists of dark smoked oak, conceived specifically for this project, and forms a contrast to the remaining space, determined by a bright filling. The pavement of oiled elm has an impressive format of 380x30cm boards and pervades the entire space. It emphasizes the flowing space continuum. Three backlit panels form the highlights in the ceiling, embracing the art works of local genius Paul Flora.

The terrace was significantly increased during the course of the redesign and builds the continuation of the internal space into the outdoor area. The direct reference to the living room is enhanced towards the terrace by inserting large window panes.

Thus produces a seemingly fluid transition between interior and exterior spaces, the border between them is almost dissolved.

The desire of the inhabitants was to create a large continuous space. The kitchen and dining room merge with the living and entrance area. The table in the dining room is the new centre of the entire living space and forms the central element of the apartment functioning as a meeting point for family and guests. The newly organized apartment is flooded with light. The use of glass allows the rear areas such as the closet to be illuminated while also creating interesting views between the rooms. Previously the apartment lost valuable living space due to the large and dark corridors. The new floor plan makes it possible to prevent this. The open plan layout allows the living areas to merge, and the borders (between rooms) to disappear. Only a few doors are used for private areas such as the bathroom or washing room.

noa* is the essential expression of a collaborative work-ethos: the young team of architects & designers, led by founders Lukas Rungger and Stefan Rier and based in Bolzano (Italy), explores and examines interdisciplinary methods of design, continuously evolving depending on both nature and requirements of each project. By following the concept of „emergence“, where the whole is perceived as being far greater than the sum of its parts, a holistic approach and strategy is central to noa*s way of conceiving design.

Teams are mixed temporarily to address imminent challenges and find innovative solutions. noa* serves as a stage (or platform) for architects, designers of interiors, graphics or fashion... as far as musicians and historians... with the collective aim to use the resources of field specialists at its best.
