House D in Bregenz

House  /  Completed
Dietrich Untertrifaller Architekten
Located on a mountain overlooking Bregenz, House D′s open floorplans and generous glazing allow for magnificent views over the surrounding countryside and Lake Constance. The home is stratified into 3 stories, with the Entrée and utilities located on the basement, guest and children′s rooms on the garden floor, and Master bedroom and an open layout kitchen + dining + living room at the top. In order to strengthen the connection to the natural environment, the living floor floats above the meadow slope, framed on all sides by wide cantilevered terraces - living extensions outdoors, protected by the roof slab.,

The geometric form of the home, combined with the architect′s decision to construct with concrete and timber, create a powerful building that seems to blend into the surrounding landscape. Furthermore, the attention to detail highlights the craftsmanship for which this region of Austria has become famous. The reduced material is finely varied: exposed concrete surfaces are smooth or with a board structure, oak and silver fir are used after atmospheric effects. Even the white surfaces offer a wide spectrum, ranging from the simple paint to the soaked lime smoothing and the white terrazzo surfaces of the bathrooms.

How can we combine urban living with a rural environment, and private life with representation: House D gives a contemporary response.

The architectswho are used to mountains are particularly capable of mastering the interaction with the totography and the landscape: wether a slope, at the edge of a terrain or a hill - the structures are always placed in an accurate and confident manner, without losing their low-key presence and without lapsing into some kind of vain narcissism.

The clear and logical floor plans provide sufficient freedom of use. Through balanced proportions and the targeted use of wood, stone, metal and glass as well als colors, they manage to create a pleasant and appealing interiors with comparatively few resources. However, certain architectural features, such as the Bregenzerwälder "Schopf" - a kind of loggia - the room frame or the open use pattern cooking-dining-living, reappear in different ways.

The architects include all topics of sustainable architecture. This includes the respectful integration of their buildings into the natural surroundings in concert with the topography to prevent additional earthwork in hillside locations. Use of natural, solid and green materials from the region supports local economy and reduces the transport routes. That is also a reason why local firms are mostly commissioned for the construction.

Curriculum

Dietrich | Untertrifaller Architects, founded in 1994, is one of the iconic agencies of the renowned School of Vorarlberg. In 1992 Helmut Dietrich and Much Untertrifaller won the international competition for the conversion and extension of the Festspielhaus in Bregenz. This first major project was followed by equally important ones, such as the Hall F of the Wiener Stadthalle, the ETH sports campus in Zurich or the Convention Center in Strasbourg. Laureate of numerous competitions, the agency has a wide variety of references: local museums and cultural facilities, office buildings and sports complexes, private houses and high-volume residential projects, interior design and revitalizations of historic buildings. Today, the agency employs an international team of 70 architects working in Austria (Bregenz and Vienna), Switzerland (St Gallen), France (Paris) and Germany (Munich). The office is lead by Helmut Dietrich, Much Untertrifaller, Dominik Philipp and Patrick Stremler.
