ENGLISH VERSION:
InsideOut is a prototype of sustainable earth school in Ghana designed by Andrea Tabocchini and Francesca Vittorini, winners of the international competition “4th Earth Architecture Competition” organized by Nka Foundation to design and realize a school in Abetenim, a small rural village in Ghana. This project won also the 2017 “Archi-World® Academy Award”, a prize given to the best students projects in the world.

Since it won the Nka Competition, this no-profit project will be realized in the summer of 2017 during a Self-Construction International Workshop that will take place from June 2nd to August 25th 2017 in Abetenim, Ghana. During this period a team of volunteers from all over the world will meet in Ghana and, guided by the project designers, will build the school in participation with the local population.

InsideOut takes inspiration from the many patterns that are present in the site and in the local culture (the textures of the typical kente clothes, the rigid oil palms grid, the vegetable gardens layout...) to propose a flexible scheme that transforms the uninspiring standard classrooms layout into a more engaging sequence of multifunctional spaces with different levels of openness.

By staggering the walls and aligning them with the existing grid of the palms, the boundary between inside and outside is eliminated, and the trunks of the palms become the continuation of the walls, domesticating the landscape. Furthermore, the transversal rotating panels can be completely opened, extending the classroom outside with a porch, or a longer wall suitable for outdoor classes, or a rows of hammocks, or a vegetable garden, or...

To involve the local population in the construction phase - and to propose a sustainable and easily replicable design - the project is based on a creative use of abundant local materials and a thoughtful use of local labor and traditions. The 60cm wide walls are built with large blocks of local rammed earth with different colors, recalling the textures of the kente clothes, protected and built on top of concrete curbs that prevents from rising damp; the floor is a mixture of clay and concrete; the structure of the corrugated aluminum roof consists of wood elements with a 10x10cm section, while the rotating panels that ensure a very bright and ventilated environment are made with thin wood strips.

A sustainable and humanitarian project that is intended to improve the state of the arts of the local construction and, at the same time, to support the cultural growth of a country where more than 500.000 children are illiterate.

VERSIONE ITALIANA:
