Club grounds of 7.5 acres in urban context at the Pacific coast. The Club consist of 19 tennis courts, swimming pools, a building accommodating fitness rooms, racquetball courts, screening rooms, daycare, restaurant, cafe, conference center, ballroom, and an office building.

Ground floor: Pool mechanical equipment room, laundry room, changing rooms, wheelchair accessible toilets, dressing and changing rooms. Roof Deck Terrace: Multi-functional open terrace for private gatherings; sundeck with cabanas. Hot Tub: new. Swimming Pools: renovation of small and large pools and pool decks, new pool equipment room.

The Pool House is one of several projects in a larger, ongoing process that Studio Antares has undertaken under the owner’s brief to revitalize the Club. The scope for the pool house includes finding a place for various functions that occupied makeshift structures or temporary sheds, renovating the existing pools, and adding a new hot tub spa.

The design approach draws inspiration from the simplicity of the California modernist tradition. It was driven by the intent to go beyond the pragmatic requirements and to find a solution that represents the rising prominence of the Club within the active beach community of Manhattan Beach.

The project addresses the buffer zone between the existing swimming pool and the tennis courts. It accommodates the previously scattered residual functions serving the pool into a single building, conceals their service and mechanical aspects, and adds a new amenity - a multifunctional terrace that becomes a focal point of the Club. The terrace serves as a VIP observation deck for the action on the tennis courts and sundeck extension of the swimming pool, featuring a direct connection to the larger restaurant and other indoor club activities.

Easy to assemble cabanas allow for the fast transformation of the terrace into an open-air room, allowing its use for weddings, parties, and other events. A new hot tub on the west side of the building shapes a quiet area under an existing coral tree, separated from the busy larger pools.

The rain screen ipe wood cladding differentiates the public zones from the service areas by contrasting the natural wood color with the smooth white cement plaster, echoing the language of the existing building.

The overall design intent is to create an environment that enhances the special experience and mood of the place, rather than to scream for attention.
