THE VILLAGE

Housing  /  Future
Project Narrative
The site is a steeply contoured one with a level difference of 36m from the highest to the lowest point. It is situated on a hilly land in Alibaug, a low urbanized area close to Mumbai in India.

Alibaug has essentially been a holiday home destination for people living in Mumbai city and is predominately low rise with individual villas & small houses. In the last few years Alibaug is witnessing the beginning of housing projects on a larger scale.

Site Constraints
The site is steeply contoured with a 36mlevel difference in the 30m width of the plot making it very steep.

Design Concept
Taking a cue from the organic development character of old Indian cities, the planning is fragmented & laid out organically along the existing slopes of the land. Keeping the existing contours virtually intact the houses step down while creating usable terraces & garden for each one overlooking the sea & facing north.

Keeping the larger existing urbanscape of low rise development with individual houses, the design creates a multihousing project that fragments the structure to merge with the landscape creating a similar look to the existing bungalow urban language rather than typical housing blocks. Located on a steeply contoured site this residential project creates apartments that cascade down along the existing land slopes allowing each one to open into a series of sheltered terraces and open gardens. Each apartment feels like an individual house nestled in the hilly land.

Echoing the undulating steep slopes the houses step diagonally or frontally and merge with the terrain creating minimal intervention with the land.

Each room of each house opens into an equivalent sized terrace over the house below while simultaneously opening into gardens on the existing contours alongside.
The southern side of each house rests against the contoured land and is thus totally protected from any heat gain. This is a very important aspect creating energy efficiency & cooler internal spaces since the climate is dry & hot with temperatures in excess of 30o C for 8 months of the year.

Designed in response to the site, ‘The Village’ is an organic design solution that has emerged from its context and creates homes that become a part of the site.

Built mostly in the local basalt stone available on site, the design creates a sustainable environment with minimal cutting of land, north orientation of all houses in response to the average temperatures of 35 C in the region and channeling all runoff water to water harvesting tanks from the profusely terraced structure.
