A new two-story addition expands the program functions of the original Life Sciences Research Center to include two MRI units and related support spaces. By integrating the needs of many academic departments across campus, the new Center for Biomedical and Brain Imaging creates a locus of research and innovation on campus, allowing the University of Delaware to compete and collaborate with similar institutions regionally and nationally. The new addition accommodates technically rigorous testing and examination rooms, fostering collaboration among an array of departments, including Psychology, Kinesiology and Applied Physiology, Physical Therapy, Biological Sciences, Animal and Food Sciences, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Astronomy, Nursing, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Applied Economics and Statistics, and others. A crisply folded warm white brick wall, unique among the red brick Georgian context of the adjacent campus buildings, establishes a prominent identity for the facility that serves both the academic community and the public. The addition occupies the space of a former parking lot, offering the opportunity to establish a formal gateway and access to the main campus quad from the town that was previously ad-hoc. The wall accomplishes the presence and necessary scale with its folds, its loggia signifying entrance to the consolidated facility. The landscaped garden and allee of trees creates the important pedestrian linkage through the site. With the folded wall as the primary architectural feature from the campus and the street, the new addition otherwise unifies the combined buildings in material, form, circulation, and function.
