ANTALYA METROPOLITAN BUS TERMINAL
A TRAVEL VENUE DESIGNED AS A SOCIAL HUB AND PUBLIC CENTER

CONCEPT
There is a growing demand for accommodating the increasing amount of human traffic and use in more spacious and comfortable travel venues. Metropolitan bus terminals in this regard are also expected to offer spacious, multi-functional and social facilities that offer a variety of services for a comfortable and smooth travel experience. These buildings are seen and designed now as public nodes and social centres offering possibilities and spaces for meeting, pass-time, recreation and socialization within a 24 hours cycle. Terminal buildings that have a wide variety of services and means to support customer comfort, satisfaction and use and are also acknowledged for their spatial qualities, provide a positive recognition and contribute to the tourism potentials and revenues of cities.

Antalya bus terminal is conceptualised in this framework. The proposed project aims to create a public centre offering travel services together with social amenities in a spacious and positive terminal building. The climate is taken as a significant contextual parameter and provided inspiration and a departure point for developing the architectural concept and language. The layout, accordingly, is planned with a transparent box acting as the functional mass and a semi-open and green courtyard. The inner garden cuts through the glass box underneath an exposed structural skeleton that also functions to support the façade and roof elements. The controlled transparency of the mass on all outer and inner facades enables continuity in between the interior and exterior, combines the functional and recreational zones both visually and physically, welcomes the in-between green space as a comfort zone and provides an ample amount of daylight. Elements of traditional architecture such as the inner courtyard, the wooden grill type of sun louvre system, protruding terraces and masses are used together with the expressive structural system, glazed facades, suspended floors and a single, spacious volume to achieve a harmonious integrity of the ‘local’ and the contemporary architecture and hence a distinctive architectural identity.

DESIGN
The structural skeleton grill defines the transparent tectonic mass and the spatial layout within. It also forms the architectural language of the building. The terminal components, program elements and the social spaces are planned in a single voluminous space wrapped with the skeleton. A linear, uninterrupted and semi-open garden stretches through the transparent mass in the middle. This outdoor place is designed to function as a climate sensitive, inner street landscaped with greenery, water and decks. The glazed interior facades on both sides of this garden street provide natural ventilation and daylight into the building. They furthermore provide a visual continuity in between all spaces and the linear garden from all spots inside the building. The garden street is also conceived as an alternative recreation promenade that absorbs the negative environmental impacts on user comfort like noise, crowd, congestion and insufficient fresh air often seen in transportation buildings.

Spaces according to their function and user traffic are clustered and distributed on two sides of the garden street. Connecting bridges and passages are proposed for the pedestrian flow in between two sides. The garden street in addition, helped to link the departure and arrival areas and waiting halls with other areas that have a relatively less dynamic traffic such as ticket kiosks, administrative offices and accommodation units. Food, beverage and refreshment areas which are extensively used in transportation facilities are planned on both the ground and the first floors; it is assumed that this will help to distribute the traffic more evenly inside the terminal building.

The exposed structural skeleton that forms the outer shell of the building also forms the silhouette of the building and helps to see it as one single mass. Its rhythm however helps to break down the linearity of the mass and the perception of lengthiness. The system is utilised as a convenient background to integrate the climate control and energy collection systems, that is, the sun louvres and photovoltaic panels, suggested to be used on the facades and the roof respectively. The building in this sense can utilise the high solar energy potential of Antalya and function as an environmentally sensitive building, producing its own energy.

Antalya bus terminal proposal intends to offer a positive and comfortable travel experience to users. In this regard it offers a medium in which the users can move easily in between spaces and hence benefit from the variety of social and functional spaces that can be used for waiting, meeting, resting and relaxing, as well as for gastronomical, retail and service oriented purposes. Projected as a building that will produce its own energy, the terminal also takes advantage of its architectural design to supply natural ventilation and daylight. It is assumed that these, taken together, will result in a building having an economically operable and productive management. The green and water used extensively inside the terminal is a design response to the climatic advantages of Mediterranean and at the same a reference to the context; they are interpreted as references to and reminders of the natural assets of Antalya.
