This cinema is located in Nanjing, next to a lot of historical buildings. In addition to the old buildings, there are also chic and modern architecture in the neighborhood, perfectly illustrating the East meets West vibe. Inspired by its surroundings, the designers combined traditional and modern elements when designing the cinema. The main color used in the cinema design, red, is a color traditionally used in old Chinese buildings and decorations, immediately reminding visitors of the Chinese culture in this district. The designers have also added contemporary design elements to the cinema, which are very unconventional.

For the theme of this cinema, the designers highlighted the importance of sound in producing a movie. Sound plays a crucial role in movies, from the characters’ dialogues, sound effects, onset recordings to music scores; all these are important elements constituting a movie. The concept of sound is portrayed in the form of sound waves. Metal tubes with red powdered coating were used to demonstrate the curved shapes of sound waves, filling the entire cinema space.

Throughout the perimeter, the red metal tubes go up and down to represent sound waves that visitors can actually see. The tubes are functional while being artistic. The wavy metal tubes curve and stretch themselves along the wall, they extend towards the ceiling the floor. In some parts of the “sound wave”, the tubes turn into a horizontal straight line, representing the stillness of sound, and at the same time provide seats for visitors to take a break and enjoy the installation around them. The designers have chosen floor tiles that match with thee historical environment of the cinema, creating a sense of connection between the interior design and the environment. The contemporary representation of sound waves and floor tiles together form an interesting chemistry between the new and the old.

The front area of the bar counter is made of black and white marble, it is surrounded by a black tube, which resembles the curvy sound waves. In the auditoriums, acoustic panels of different shades of red and grey are piled up to create 3D sound wave patterns on the wall.

At different times of the day, natural light passes through the red glass door of the cinema and enter the lobby, coloring the whole space in red and create various atmosphere.

Challenges:
Sound plays an irreplaceable role in movies, from the characters’ dialogues, sound effects, onset recordings, to music scores; all these are important elements constituting a movie. For the theme of this cinema, the designers pinpointed the importance of sound in producing a movie.

However, it was challenging to portray the idea of sound wave. As sonic is itself invisible, the designers had to create a visible representation of sound waves to present the theme to the customers.

In the final design, the designers produced red metal tubes to illustrate the movement of sound waves. The design of these tubes was harder than imagined, as it requires more than randomly twisting tubes here and there. It was crucial to consider both aesthetical elements and functionality of these tubes. As the installation is located in a cinema, it was crucial for the designers to plan where to place these tubes to not block the audience walking around the space.

Solutions:
To portray sound waves in a visible form, the designers created an imitation of the presentation of sound waves in an equalizer. Metal tubes with red powdered coating were used to demonstrate the curved shapes of sound waves, filling the entire cinema space. Throughout the whole cinema, the audience can see a variety of different sound wave forms through the upward and downward movement of these red metal tubes.

Other than serving as an installation art piece, the designers actually made these tubes useful. Along the wall of the corridor, the waves form curves and stretch themselves towards the ceiling and to the floor. In some parts of the sound wave, the tubes turn into a horizontal straight line, representing the stillness of sound, and at the same time provide seats for visitors to take a break and enjoy the breathtaking installation around them.

In order to better plan the whole form of sound waves, the designers created 3D models to design the movement of the tubes, to make sure that they look nice and presents the best effect. It was also helpful in making sure that the arrangement of the tubes suits the needs of the client. As we require very flexible arrangements of the tubes, these metal tubes are custom-made.
