The recently completed Murialdo Suites hotel built at Riva del Garda forms part of the longer-established hotel and catering complex Du Lac & Du Parc Grand Resort set among majestic woodland on the northern banks of Lake Garda.
For the new building Studio Spatium were the architects and Ata Group the structural engineers. The suites rise five storeys high, with two basement levels destined for garages. Extremely regular in its geometrical plan, the structure of sand-blasted painted steel encloses loggias and glass curtain walls to east and west, while the south elevation rises in steps forming the suites’ broad wooden-paved terraces that face out over the verdant park.
Fima’s fully pre-fabricated steel construction offered many advantages in terms of assembly, cost containment, fire resistance and load capacity, as well as making possible great breadth of spans with minimal loss of space. It is made of (Ø 406 mm and Ø 457 mm) tubular steel uprights, complete with upper and lower anchorage flanges on the inside of which full-height laminated steel HEA/HEB profiles are welded and then buried in the finishing cast-in-place concrete slab, achieving great bearing capacity. The welded steel cross girders are of full-floor thickness. The alveolar concrete floor slabs are relatively thin and rest on the lower reinforcing plate of the girders.
The outer curtain walls and terraces are a composite structure of HEA profile steel uprights and all-steel parapets.
Fima again supplied the steel finishings such as the bands lining the string-courses, the structure and banisters of the staircases, and the bearing structure of the pagodas perched on the top-floor solarium-terraces.
The linear simplicity of steel, twinning with white render, glass and wood, enables this building to blend harmoniously with the surrounding parkland and the existing buildings.
