Organic Workspace is the term Haworth have found to sum up their design philosophy, based on the insight that work environments these days need built-in flexibility, geared to and favouring change within the company. The focus is on respecting the environment, saving money and saving time. For a work place to be an organic system, it must meet three requirements: integration, which is to say combining aesthetic look and practical function, consistent with the interior layout and the nature of the work; adaptability, via modular products that are easy to arrange and rearrange as the organization dictates; sustainability, where room design minimizes wastage of resources, creates a healthier, more comfortable workspace, costs less and saves energy. Over the years Haworth has built up contacts with outsourced specialists, Institutes of Research & Development and some of the world’s prestige university faculties. This has led to functional ergonomic products prompting creativity, spontaneity and efficiency among those working with them. Understanding work procedures, group dynamics and company lore is the key to creating a company workspace. It must reflect each organization’s present strengths and targeted improvements, engender physical and psychological well-being in the staff, boost the firm’s productivity and competitiveness. If the design goes for flexibility of layout from the outset, meeting today’s needs but adapting to tomorrow’s, it will simplify, accelerate and minimize the cost/inconvenience of subsequent alterations. Haworth’s prime objectives in terms of product sustainability are twofold: that the materials used be recycled as far as possible, or recyclable at least when their useful lifespan is over, and that they be safe for human beings and the environment.
