Designed by Silvio d’Ascia, Smart Office is an innovative workstation for state-of-the-art tertiary sector needs. Developed in collaboration with the Mio Dino Faram Group, and still only a prototype, Smart Office combines designer aesthetics with the latest generation of technologies that have revolutionized the way we work over the past twenty years. Traditional office furniture can no longer support the wealth and complexity of our new working tools. At the same time, workstations are no longer necessarily found just in an office. Homes, hotels and community areas are becoming increasingly technology-enabled. Smart Office was developed in the knowledge that places of work are now often “decontextualized” as the latest generation of portable computers, touch-screens and multifunctional tools allow us to move out of the office. In addition, this new project brings the traditional office workstation into line with the continuous flow of new, faster, better and less cumbersome technology. Stand-alone or coming in pairs, Smart Office is a single compact, variable geometry unit. It contains a pc and screen, extractable keyboard, seat and shelf. Connectable to any electrical or IT network, its functions range from home automation to digital information and computer data management. Its minimalist design, rounded edges, smooth surfaces and bright colours recall an outsized smart-phone. Its form - somewhat reminiscent of a funeral stele - could even be described as an ironic tribute to the traditional office desk. The central swivel base occupies minimum floor space while the back of the desk can be used as a signage or advertisement board. Functional and aesthetically pleasing, Smart Office is perfectly suited to any home or third sector environment such as hotel lobbies, stations, airports, shopping malls, department stores, public and administrative areas - wherever public access to information is available.
