Course Description
The course examines how the contemporary design developed by a leading Italian architectural firm established in the early 1970s for a new residential complex combines dynamic forms and modern materials. The architects’ wanted their Rome building to reflect what is being done in other, less conservative, European cities. Despite the strong focus on the aesthetic, the complex meet occupant function needs and give meticulous attention to detail and finishes. The course describes the new building through images and technical drawings, and provides construction details of the structure and finishes, explanatory legends, along with an introductory text that provides the student with a wider view of this firm’s work.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

1. Describe the design features that allow the building to interact with its setting and pre-existing buildings avoiding strident discontinuities in either street frontage or skyline.
2. Explain the choice of building materials, sun-shading, and finishes, and evaluate the checks performed during the construction phase to ensure the durability of the building’s aesthetic and functional features.
3. Analyze how aesthetic and functional features, including interior spatial distribution, intertwine to ensure optimal comfort levels.
4. Examine the importance of comparison with other European cities in order to stimulate innovation of form and materials.
