Course Description
The course examines a project within a 14th century Danish farm built around a large central courtyard. The project involved redesigning existing buildings to make them more suitable for new functions. It also involved rethinking the relationship between the complex itself, a nearby lake, and the natural contours of the land while respecting the original layout and limiting the program’s environmental impact. The course includes an introductory text, images, numerous technical drawings and a construction plan of the main building to describe a project in which the beauty of its natural setting is a key element of the overall design plan. The reader is given a comprehensive overview of the technologies and materials employed, with particular focus on how these relate to the architectural design.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

1. Describe the design features employed to enable the complex to fit harmoniously into the natural landscape with minimal environmental impact.
2. Discuss what form the relationship between the buildings and nature takes, and how the architects have created a landmark that forms part of the landscape itself.
3. Explain the design choices made, in terms of the use of materials to build different types of buildings that follow the contours of the land and reflect the colors of the setting.
4. Analyze the importance of communication between client and architect, and among the different professionals in order to produce a building that not only meets its functional brief but also ensures optimal occupant comfort.
