Course DescriptionThe course describes a single-family home representative of the work of Rafiq Azam from Shatotto. Synonymous with Bangladesh itself, water plays an important role in Azam’s architecture and contributes to the personality of S.A House on every floor. Nature, in the form of small gardens and various kinds of plants, also enter the home, becoming part of the life of its residents. This elegant yet boldly geometric building has been constructed using materials that underpin its strong architectural identity, while responding to residents’ needs in terms of comfort, livability, and spatial usability. The course describes the new building through images and technical drawings, and provides construction details with explanatory legends and an introductory text.
Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Analyze the arrangement of volumes, and describe how the arrangement of the circulation routes achieve spatial usability as well as provide a variety of view angles inside the home.
- Describe how the home fits into its urban location and blends with adjacent buildings.
- Analyze the building materials used, including the sun-shading and finishes, and how they contribute to occupant comfort.
- Analyze the relationship between the interior and exterior, and explain how the house fits into its setting especially thanks to the particular materials and forms employed.
