Course DescriptionThe course examines a visually striking office building designed as part of the much wider Milanofiori Masterplan, an urban regeneration project for an outlying area of Milan, Italy. In the U15 building, materials and design strategies converge to produce an innovative contemporary architecture characterized by dynamically fluid forms. The course includes an introductory text, numerous pictures, and technical and construction drawings with explanatory legends. It provides an exhaustive overview of the project and how technologies and materials have been employed to produce a truly spectacular building. The course also includes an interview with the designer. On reading the articles and after studying the technical drawings, you will be able to explain – and use in your own practice - the specific design features implemented and how such a singular architectural project can be made to mesh with its wider urban context.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Assess the innovative features of the circulation routes both inside and outside the building, and explain how these contribute to the optimal use of space.
- With the aid of the construction drawing, explain the building technologies employed and how the cladding materials have been used to achieve a particularly striking pictorial effect.
- Explain how functions within the building have been allocated on the basis of spatial distribution, which in turn is defined by overall design.
- Analyze the design process that led to such a striking building.
