Course Description
The course focuses on a residential building in the historic southwestern outskirts of the city of Milan. The building is synonymous with the major urban and architectural transformation of the area. The project responds to housing needs in terms of comfort, livability and usability of spaces, combining this with the architects’ emphasis on elegance. The course describes the new building through images and technical drawings, and provides construction details with explanatory legends and an introductory text.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

1. Describe the design methods and measures taken so that the building fits harmoniously into its urban setting.
2. Analyze the emphasis on restraint that the architects incorporated into the building, which in some respects is similar to a nineteenth century villa.
3. Examine the aspects of the project that combine high living standards with respect for the environment, and explain how the interaction between architecture and landscape is pivotal.
4. Analyze the materials used to construct the building, including its sun-shading and finishes, assessing the comfort levels of the apartments in terms of their functional features.
