054-fima Designed by Valentino Ivano Sebellin of the Seiv Group, the new headquarters of specialist paper manufacturer Scotton at Borso del Grappa in north east Italy brings all company activities under one roof. The new, approx. 150,000 cubic-metre volume has a surface area of around 25,000 sq m, enough to house production, offices, showroom and a new automated warehouse. The location is particularly sensitive and strictly regulated: the foothills of the Veneto mountain range near Monte Grappa. Difficult geomorphological conditions meant that preliminary consolidation work had to be carried out including deviation of ground waters and the sinking of pile foundations. The site also demanded appropriate architectural solutions. It determined the materials, the decision to place part of the complex underground and to have a lightweight above-ground office building topped by a metal roof that follows the natural lay of the land. Asymmetrical, transparent glazed façades provide glimpses onto the inside breaking up the solid ground-floor perimeter walls. The result is a building that sits well in its surrounds, a distinctive yet discreet presence that enhances rather than hinders the natural beauty all around. Most of the structural frame is in traditional prefabricated concrete. The office level has a steel frame. All prefabricated painted metal structures, covering some 3000 square metres, were designed and manufactured by Fima. They include the main columns and the vertical and inclined vertical side pillars that converge on a single base plate to support the main arched roof beams. Along the front façade, two irregular trapeze-like canopies cantilever out to signpost the main entrance. Like the roof, a steel frame supports copper-green painted seamed aluminium panels. Inside, the atrium contains the lift well whose glass cladding is by frame maker Ialc. Ialc also provided the internal glass and aluminium frames and the glazed façades whose profiles were adapted to fit the irregular design of the large stretch of ground floor wall. Great care was given to ensure the highest technological standards for the office façades on the first floor. The equipment allowing remote operability of the openings is concealed in the façade profiles with the possibility of multiple unit control. Thanks to the architectural programme and excellent cooperation among all involved, this innovative complex fuses with its context while meeting the demanding service requirements of the client.
