Course DescriptionThe course examines an example of contemporary architecture that has been integrated into its natural setting in an original and elegant fashion. Essential in form, the building was constructed using modern, high-performance materials in keeping with the demands for comfort, livability, and spatial usability of contemporary lifestyles. The course describes the project through images, technical drawings, construction details with explanatory legends, and an introductory text. On completing the course, the student will be able to discuss the importance of respecting a project’s natural setting, including the use of natural materials, with particular reference to the way architectural design contribute to meeting occupant functional requirements.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Describe how the design allows the building to blend into its hilly countryside setting.
- Analyze the importance of communication between the client, architect, and builder so as to fully respond to the needs of a building’s users.
- Examine the aspects of the project that combine high quality living standard and respect for the home’s natural setting, and explain how the interaction between architecture and function is pivotal to the project.
- Analyze the materials used to construct the house, including its structural components, sun-shading, and finishes, assessing the comfort levels of the rooms in terms of their functional requirements.
