Course DescriptionThe course examines how a single design can encapsulate an architect’s entire approach to architecture. The building, in Porto, Portugal, is emblematic for understanding how design can produce a building that meets the demands of contemporary living in terms of comfort, livability, and the use of space. The course comprises images, technical and construction detail drawings with legends, and an introductory text. On completing the course, the student will be able to discuss how contemporary living has refocused on the relationship between the interior and exterior, how the functions of homes have changed, and how this project, which is emblematic of contemporary living, will be able to retain its relevance through time.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Analyze the relationship between interior and exterior spaces, the function of the covered loggia, and the formal and functional roles of the projections in the façade.
- Demonstrate how the project is emblematic of contemporary living design and which of its features underscore this.
- Analyze how the project incorporates both art and architecture.
- Interpret the relationship between light and shade, and how this affects the more theatrical aspects of the design.
