Course Description
The course describes a public residential facility for the elderly. Attention is given to how the project by architects Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus on organizes spaces to meet the special needs of elderly residents, and analyzes the specific measures taken to achieve this. The course contains an introductory text, technical drawings, images, and construction details with descriptive captions.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

  1. Analyze the materials, curtain walls, sun-shading, flooring, and paving used in the project, with particular attention to occupant comfort, and then apply these aspects to domestic comfort issues in general.
  2. Describe the measures taken so that the building fits harmoniously, and with minimum environmental impact, into the surrounding landscape. Discuss how the architects were able to optimize available space to make the new building the least “invasive” possible.
  3. Analyze the program features that ensure high comfort levels in terms of the special needs of the residents and explain how the architects were able to meet these diverse needs.
  4. Explain the measures taken to provide common areas while also meeting the need for privacy.
