Course Description
The course looks at an iconic project on a new Nanjing university campus: a low-budget, low-tech construction conceived to convey a sense of the accumulated strata of human experience. Special focus is given the building’s most striking exterior feature - its singular, ceramic-clad roof-cum-envelope. Course material includes a descriptive text, many photographs, and a series of technical and construction-detail drawings with accompanying legend, and provides detailed information especially on the envelope and construction system.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

  1. Analyze the project’s scope and its suitability for context.
  2. Analyze how the structural and exterior cladding and flooring materials, with special focus on ceramic tiling, contribute to making the building an integral part of its urban context.
  3. Identify the program features that contribute to ensuring the livability of the interior environments, and describe the way circulation routes have been designed for user-friendly use.
  4. Analyze how the architects have succeeded in combining occupant comfort in all areas with a visually impactful construction and exterior cladding.
