Course DescriptionThe course looks at a building designed as part of a new digital technology hub located in a science park dedicated to advanced energy-saving technology. The overall project is described and new energy-efficient materials and technologies implemented are discussed. Course material includes an explanatory text and an interview with Enric Ruiz-Geli, many photographs, an scale model of the building, and a series of technical drawings and construction-details of the envelope and structural frame with accompanying legends. On completing the course, you will have gained a broad overview of the project and detailed information on the high-performance technologies and materials used in this “green architecture” venture.

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Explain how the envelope and finishes, especially ETFE, contribute to occupant comfort in terms of luminosity and temperature control.
- Identify how the innovative use of special steel structures improve interior spatial distribution, occupant comfort, and energy efficiency.
- Analyze the innovative technology features in terms of the architectural esthetic, and discuss the reasons behind the choices made by architects.
- Define what is meant by ‘smart building’, describe the specific ‘smart-building’ features implemented in this project and how they improve the building’s environmental sustainability.
