Course DescriptionThe course examines the new offshoot in Metz, France, of the world famous Paris museum, the building whose contemporary architecture and unconventional materials paved the way for much experimental work using new structural systems and finishes to create innovative showcases for works of art. A complete overview of the Metz project will be provided and the technologies and materials discussed. Course material includes an explanatory text, many photographs, a series of technical drawings, and a construction-detail of the envelope and construction system with accompanying legends. On completing the course, you will have an exhaustive overview of the project and be able to describe the high-performance technologies and materials used in relation to the innovative spatial distribution proposed by the architectural design.
Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:
- Explain the reasons behind the particular choice of structural frame and roof-cum-envelope and how this contributes to occupant comfort as well as being an innovative take on a museum environment.
- Identify the construction elements in relation to the architectural esthetic as a whole.
- Analyze the features of the Metz center that represent either continuity with or detachment from the iconic Pompidou center in Paris and the extent to which the new center realizes an innovative departure.
- Define how the lighting system meets the illumination requirements of an environment displaying works of art.
