Course Description
The course describes a mixed-use building in Mahallat, Iran. This is a significant project for providing an understanding of how design combined with the use of reclaimed materials can fulfill the requirements of a building’s interior functions. The course comprises images, technical and construction detail drawings with legends, and an introductory text. On completing the course, you will be able to discuss the importance of respecting the environment in which a project is built in terms of the use of traditional materials, with particular reference to the combination of stone and other materials

Learning Objectives – after reading the article and studying the drawings, you will be able to:

  1. Discuss the steps taken by the architects to maximize comfort levels and the methods used to deal with different climatic conditions.
  2. Explain the design decisions in terms of materials, in particular as regards reclaimed materials.
  3. Investigate how design combined with the use a natural material such as stone can fulfill the requirements of a building’s interior functions while respecting its surrounding environment.
  4. Research the measures taken to achieve adequate lighting of the interior spaces.
